PowerHouse/WMS

Administration

One of the goals in designing PowerHouse WMS was to make it as powerful and flexible as possible while still being simple to administer.

PowerHouse provides groupings such as Item Classes and Location Types to make administration easier. By allowing parameters to be set at the group level, the characteristics of thousands of items or locations can be changed in a few seconds in a single place. Values applied to the group can also be overridden at the individual level. For instance, if lot control is not generally required, lots can be turned off at the global (Owner) level. If there is a group of items that do require lots, lot control can be turned on for all items in the group (Item Class) in one operation. If there happen to be a few items within the group that do not require lots, lot control can be turned back off on those particular items.

Individual locations can be created in the system en masse using our Global Location Maintenance screen. A profile is created detailing the location numbering scheme and pick path mappings. The administrator defines the ranges of values to be used for the aisles, bays, levels and slots covered by the profile and chooses which elements will be used during pick path sortations. Once the profile is defined, the administrator will supply the dimensional values for the locations that are to be created, as well as other information such as the location type, whether it has any special characteristics for putaway, restocking or picking, etc. Upon clicking the generate button, thousands of locations can be created in a few minutes. After they have been created, the same screen and profile can also be used to modify the locations instantly (for instance, to change the maximum allowed weight in the locations).

Picking, Put-away, Restocking and Cross-docking are all controlled by configurable rules. An administrator can modify these rules at any time to effect changes to the business model. Rules can be as simple as "Find an empty location and put it there" or they can be complex evaluations of min/max levels for locations (or groups of locations), calculations of distance from the assigned pick face, applied holds and many other factors.
