How Unified Are Your Logistics Processes?
In today’s complex supply chain environment, taking a unified and synchronized approach to transportation and distribution management is more crucial than ever. An online survey reveals the significant business advantages of such an approach. But how aligned are your logistics processes, and what challenges might be standing in your way?
Traditionally, many companies have operated their transportation and distribution processes in silos, often relying on separate software systems like Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). But in today’s fast-paced market, the question arises: How unified and synchronized are your logistics operations? And what are the primary obstacles to achieving this integration?
The Reality of Disconnected Systems
Recent surveys within the supply chain community indicate that a large majority of companies still struggle with unifying their logistics processes. Specifically, 83% of respondents rated their processes as “Moderately,” “Slightly,” or “Not Unified/Synchronized at All,” with only a mere 3% reporting “Extremely Unified/Synchronized” processes.
One of the key differentiators for those who have achieved greater synchronization is the integration of their software applications. Among companies with “Extremely/Very Unified” logistics processes, 80% credited this achievement to well-integrated software systems.
However, the biggest hurdle to a more unified approach remains the lack of cross-functional optimization capabilities, a challenge cited by 56% of respondents.
The Technology Barrier
One of the primary takeaways from this research is that while the industry recognizes the need to break down silos between transportation and distribution management, very few companies have successfully done so. A significant barrier is the technology itself. Many organizations still rely on software from different vendors that are poorly integrated, especially older systems that lack modern API and web service capabilities.
To truly optimize logistics operations, it’s not enough to simply share data between TMS and WMS. Companies need an optimization engine that considers transportation, warehousing, and yard resources, allowing for cross-functional decision-making and efficiency.
Another challenge highlighted by the survey is the role of third-party logistics providers (3PLs). For companies outsourcing their logistics operations, poor integration between 3PL systems and in-house ERP systems often exacerbates the disconnection.
Beyond Technology: The Need for Cross-Functional Metrics
Technology alone isn’t the solution. The survey results suggest that companies also need to adopt cross-functional metrics and incentives that encourage collaboration between transportation and distribution functions. As one executive noted, conflicting priorities between these areas can create inefficiencies, making it essential to establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that balance these functions strategically.
The Benefits of a Unified Approach
For companies that overcome these challenges, the benefits of a unified logistics approach are substantial. According to the survey, the top advantages include utilizing real-time shipment visibility to adjust inbound appointment schedules, better matching warehouse labor with inbound arrivals, and reducing carrier wait times and detention fees.
Looking Ahead
At QSSI, we understand the challenges and opportunities that come with unifying logistics processes.
